countdown

Only one more day until I hit the road...

Yes - I'm driving rather than flying in for my short stint as artist-in-residence

I've got quite a lot of gear to transport...
stuff that airports view with suspicion these days
('is that knife in your pocket?')

Byron Bay is approx 1500kms from my little home at Sams Creek
so it's going to take me 2 days to drive alllllll the way up the coast
and another 2 days to drive alllll the way back home again

(I hope the car doesn't collapse under the weight of the books inside!)

thinking and making and packing...

Most of the preparation for a project
and this arty project is no exception

is spent thinking and planning...

I've been thinking and planning and wondering
about what indeed I'll be making and doing at the BBWF
since I was first approached to be the festival's artist-in-residence...

yes I know I'm going to be doing my usual stuff
(ephemeral bits with my books)

but I've also been making a few new things
specifically thinking about the festival's theme
'feel the passion'

will they be unpacked in Byron Bay?

I don't know yet

lets see

who the hell are you?

well hi there - you found me!

I'm Rhonda Ayliffe (I happily answer to 'ronnie')

I'm a contemporary artist living on the far south coast of NSW
Later this week I'm heading north to the Byron Bay Writers Festival
to take up the challenge of being the Festival's first ever
artist-in-residence
(you can read my formal BBWF profile here)

I'm often referred to as 'the-mad-book-lady'

that's because I tend to do things like this...

and this

and this

and this

(you can check out more of the 'damage' here)

My current work uses bulk amounts of unwanted books
(discarded treasures that are one step away from landfill or the pulp mill)

to create ephemeral sculptures and installations

or book-based artworks like this

and this

you could say

I like books

a lot!

I also like to post pics and tell tales right here in blogland

here's my primary blog site
(from there you'll find a rabbit-warren of links
to other bloggy webby bits...
good luck navigating the path!)

sooooooo for BBWF - expect a whole lot of books
(in weird and wonderful places and positions)
and a whole lot of blogging

here, there, and everywhere in between
that means even if you can't get to the festival site,
you'll get an artist's eye-view right here

I hope to see you all again soon!

cheers

ronnie x
